So it’s best mans speech time at the reception, which can be entertaining, emotional, funny and sometimes a 1-hour boredom marathon, but right now say here’s some tips to keep it fun, interesting & meaningful.

The best mans speech is important in the general scheme of things and typically is expected to give a positive, light hearted and funny speech to bring the mood up after some, no doubt heavy emotionally based toasts. He’s the ‘entertainer’ in the mix. To make sure the best man has a good speech, here are a few pointers:

  1. Short and Sweet: Try to get the best mans speech all said in around 1000 words or 5 – 7 minutes. It’s not ‘This is Your Life’, or an autobiography of every experience that have ever been shared. After all, it’s a celebration, a party.
  2. Have a Laugh: The best mans speech has to have some humour, but don’t go over the top with embarrassing or long winded details. Really think about whether or not you need to recite a whole story, complete with every little detail. Set the scene, overview the plot, then get to the punch line.
  3. No History Lessons: Don’t include more than one short reminiscent story. Remember, you are generally speaking to a room where half the people there don’t know the other half. Keep the best mans speech entertaining to everyone, even people who have never met the characters you’re talking about.
  4. Bring on the Banter: Don’t be afraid to poke a little fun at the groom but the ratio should be 2 positives to every one negative.
  6. Lay The Butter On: Always, and I mean ALWAYS compliment the Bride.
  7. Potty Mouth: Don’t use swear words. I know in Australia things are a little more relaxed than other cultures in regard to swearing. However, keep in mind that this is going to be something looked back on for many years to come, and when you’re old and grey, you don’t want to have to cover your grand children ears. Keep it a cheeky ‘G’ people.
  8. Start Strong: It’s a great idea to at least have the first 2 lines or so completely memorised. Then, if you need to, read the rest of your speech word for word, but try to keep your head up as much as possible and speak to the audience and not down to a piece of paper.
  9. Open Up The Airways: This is one that a lot of people struggle with. Speak, clearly, loudly, slow it down a bit and don’t be afraid to use pauses between sections of your speech. Also at funny moments allow time for everyone to enjoy the laughter after you’ve nailed a punch line.
  10. The Toast: Make the toast the climax of the speech. Keep it sharp and joyful. People generally remember the last thing you say more than any other content of the speech, so finish with a bang.
